31 Days Closer to Health, Wellness and Bathing Suit Season, Day 3

Ditch All-or-Nothing Mentality
Sandy
Nothing will derail your fitness efforts faster than all-or-nothing thinking. It’s the voice that says,

“I don’t have a full hour to work out, so I’m not exercising today.”
“I already messed up breakfast, I might as well eat this cake…and French fries…with a giant Pepsi. And order deep-dish meat-lovers pizza for dinner. And sit on the couch and watch Judge Judy. While I eat this bowl of ice cream with crushed up Girl Scout cookies on top.”
“If I can’t do it perfectly, I won’t do it at all.”
You have literally hundreds of opportunities every single day to choose the healthy option.
  • You can choose fruit over the bagel and cream cheese.
  • You can choose to run up the stairs instead of walk.
  • You can choose to drink a few sips of water as you swing through the kitchen.
  • You can choose to grab an apple and a few nuts as you’re headed out to run errands.
  • You can choose to park at the back of the parking lot, and walk.
  • Or you can just choose to walk and not drive at all.
  • You can pull into Panera Bread instead of Burger King.
  • While at Panera Bread, you can order soup and salad instead of another bagel and cream cheese.
  • You can choose to do a 20-minute workout instead of read blogs (say what?)
  • You can choose to bypass dessert.
  • You can order green tea instead of a venti vanilla latte.
  • You can grill the chicken instead of fry it.
  • You can choose steamed veggies over a plate of pasta.
  • You can choose to bypass the bowl of cereal (or chips or ice cream) before bedtime.
  • You can choose to go to bed instead of read blogs (say what???)
What a tragedy it would be to miss all the little healthy opportunities in a day, simply because we couldn’t get past our choice to eat the bagel this morning. So what, if you ate the bagel?

So what, if it was a big ole’ giant white flour bagel with full-fat cream cheese…and you ate the entire thing and you loved every stinking second of it?

Seriously…So what???!!!

You can still choose to run up the stairs instead of walk. And drink a few sips of water as you swing through the kitchen. And grab an apple and nuts on your way out the door….

Like I said yesterday, fitness is 80% mental. Right thinking is half the battle.
No, wait…I mean 4/5 of the battle.

(It's been a while since I converted percentages to fractions and then reduced the fraction.)

  2. And when I occasionally pick up a Key Lime Pie from Publix, I could choose to make it last a week instead of wolfing it down (with some help) in 2 days! Or maybe I'll just continue to choose to pick one up 2 x a year and enjoy the wolfing!

  5. So true for me. The all or nothing thinking is part of the perfectionism for me. I'm working to let that go.
Thanks for all the hard work you put in to your blogs!

  6. Making healthly choices right along with you! And trying to remind myself:

    "Thou shalt not eat too little during thy day;

For then thy shall be starving at 8 p.m. and wilst not be able to resist the mini Oreos."

I'm thinking of making this into a plaque - I think Hobby Lobby would sell them out!

  7. It is so evident to me that this is all about balance. Living in one extreme or the other really throws us off.

  10. My office is right next to a Buffalo Wild Wings, and it was so easy to indulge in boneless wing day! But last time, myself and another coworker decided to go healthy and get the naked grilled tenders, and they were soooo much more delicious than the boneless wings! I've made them my new regular when we have lunch out. Very highly recommended!
